At the outskirts of Matamata lies the 1,250 acre Hobbiton Movie Set, where JRR Tolkien's beloved tales came to life. Here, immerse yourself in the very landscape that gave rise to heroes like Frodo and Sam.
The guided Hobbiton tour encompasses the Green Dragon Inn, Party Marquee, Bag End, and 44 charming Hobbit holes. Discover the remarkable transformation of this countryside into the iconic Middle Earth. Afterwards, explore Matamata before venturing to the renowned Waitomo Glow-worm caves. Here, a 45-minute guided journey unveils the subterranean wonders, from ancient stalagmites to stalactites. The highlight awaits in the 'Glowworm Grotto', an enchanting underground realm where thousands of glistening glowworms illuminate the surroundings, creating a truly magical experience. The return journey to Auckland includes a stop for optional afternoon tea.
