This great value package allows visitors to the Bay of Islands access to all the historical wonders of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds combined with an entertaining and interactive cultural performance and a traditional Hangi-style meal. Visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is an essential itinerary item for anyone who wants to gain a true appreciation for the origins of "Modern New Zealand", with the site featuring numerous informative and educational displays and presentations that help garner perspective on NZ's traditional Maori culture. With the addition of the newly opened Museum of Waitangi, the historical learning capabilities are further enhanced through the use of multi media and visual displays.
This package features a live cultural performance that is both entertaining and powerful, and features an emphasis on audience interaction and engagement that helps add to the experience. Capping off the combo is a traditionally-prepared Hangi meal that showcases authentic methods.

What you need to know
- Guided tour 50 mins – one of our local guided , many of which are descended from those who signed the treaty tell the story of the journey of Māori and European arrival in to New Zealand. Taking in the flagstaff( the spot where the treaty was signed), the Treaty House, the carved meeting house and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe.
- Cultural Experience 30 mins - Experience a fun filled and spine tingling performance of singing, poi, stick games, Maori weaponry, as well as the famous haka. All performances begin with a traditional Māori powhiri (welcome/challenge) outside the carved Meeting House. After the show meet the performers, ask questions and take photos with the team.
- Access to Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi – a state of the art Museum built in 2016 which explains the events leading up to the Treaty and beyond
- Access to Te Rau Aroha/ The price of Citizenship Museum - a memorial to the Maori Battalions built in 2019

- From Auckland take State Highway One north, following the Twin Coast Discovery tourist route, 165 km to Whangarei. Continue on SH1 approximately 60 km further north, to the point where SH1 bends left to the town of Kawakawa. Follow the signs straight ahead at this junction, a further 15 km to Paihia. The waterfront road through Paihia arrives at a roundabout. Waitangi Treaty Grounds is signposted straight ahead, across a narrow vehicle bridge. Driving time approximately 3 hours

- Drive south on State Highway 10 approximately 10 km. At the Puketona junction turn off left, signposted to Paihia, approximately 18 km to the oceanfront roundabout. Turn left to Waitangi Treaty Grounds

- Watch as our expert hāngi chef unveils your dinner and explains the traditional cooking process
- Be transported back in time on a short bush walk, where you will be approached by Māori warriors and experience a traditional challenge (wero)
- Our performing arts group Te Pitowhenua will entertain you with a high energy cultural performance
- Enjoy a delicious buffet Hangi dinner and steamed pudding for dessert.
