Discover Attractions

Darwin attractions run from a cage dive with crocodiles in the middle of the CBD to hand-feeding wild fish at Doctors Gully and a wartime aviation museum on the Stuart Highway. This page covers the attractions Experience Oz sells tickets for, grouped by what you'll actually do, so you can match them to the time and the people you've got. If you're still mapping out the trip, things to do in Darwin has the full picture.

Crocosaurus Cove and the Cage of Death

Crocosaurus Cove and the Cage of Death sits at 58 Mitchell Street in the Darwin CBD, within easy walking distance of most of the city's major accommodation. It has its own page because it covers a whole range of ways to meet saltwater crocodiles, from wandering the reptile displays to being lowered into the enclosure.

The tandem Cage of Death dive puts two people in a purpose-built glass cylinder for a 15-minute cage dive within the saltwater crocodile enclosure, and it includes entry to the cove for the day. Going alone? The solo Cage of Death dive gives you the same 15-minute dive. If you'd rather stay dry, general admission tickets to Crocosaurus Cove cover the daily barramundi feeding, the turtles and other reptiles, and the educational talks.

The croc feed experience is the hands-on option. It adds a VIP guided tour of the park, a chance to hold rare reptiles, a go at feeding an adult saltwater crocodile and a paddle in the freshwater aquarium to help feed the animals. Sessions run at 10am and 1pm.

Darwin history attractions: the Flying Doctor Service and Aviation Museum

Darwin was bombed in February 1942, and two attractions tell that story. The Royal Flying Doctor Service Darwin Tourist Facility at 45 Stokes Hill Road pairs the history of the RFDS with a virtual reality experience of the bombing of Darwin Harbour. It's self-guided, with headset audio translation in Japanese, German, French and Simplified Chinese.

The Flying Doctor and Aviation Museum combo ticket adds the Darwin Aviation Museum at 557 Stuart Highway, Winnellie. Each attraction can fill a visit of up to two hours, and the second ticket has to be used within seven days of the first.

The Croc and History Explorer package joins Crocosaurus Cove, the RFDS tourist facility and a 24-hour pass on the Darwin Explorer hop-on hop-off bus into one booking, with each part valid for a 30-day window from your first experience.

Wild fish feeding and an outback show

Aquascene's wild fish feeding at 28 Doctors Gully Road, Larrakeyah, happens on the high tide, when guides hand-feed wild fish and you can wade in ankle-deep to join in. Food for the fish is included in the ticket and the Gully Cafe is open every day. Doctors Gully was also a Royal Australian Air Force base in World War II, so the tide-time visit comes with some Catalina squadron history.

Further south in Katherine, the outback show on a working farm is a 2-hour session of live country music, working dog and horse training demonstrations, and a chance to pat and feed station animals. Katherine is a drive south of Darwin, so it suits a Top End road trip more than a city stop.

How to choose between Darwin attractions

A simple way to choose is by how close you want to get to the wildlife. Watching a feed or wandering the reptile displays at Crocosaurus Cove is the gentle end, the croc feed tour is hands-on, and the Cage of Death is as close as it gets. The Flying Doctor facility and the aviation museum suit a quieter stretch of the day, and the package that joins them to the cove is a single booking.

More Darwin experiences beyond the CBD

Once the attractions are ticked off, Darwin tours head out to Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine, Darwin cruises cover harbour sunset and dinner trips, and Darwin cultural experiences look at Aboriginal art, rock art and local history.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main attractions in Darwin?

Crocosaurus Cove and its Cage of Death dive, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Darwin Tourist Facility, the Darwin Aviation Museum and Aquascene's wild fish feeding at Doctors Gully are the Darwin attractions Experience Oz sells tickets for.

Is Crocosaurus Cove in the Darwin city centre?

Yes. Crocosaurus Cove is at 58 Mitchell Street in the Darwin CBD, within easy walking distance of most of Darwin's major accommodation.

Which Darwin attractions suit kids?

Crocosaurus Cove general admission has child tickets for ages 4 to 15 and family tickets, and Aquascene's fish feeding has child tickets for ages 3 to 15, with all children accompanied by an adult ticket holder.

How old do you have to be for the Cage of Death?

The tandem Cage of Death dive has a minimum age of 15, and 15 to 17-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult. The solo Cage of Death dive has a minimum age of 18.

When does Aquascene fish feeding happen in Darwin?

Aquascene feeds wild fish during high tide, so sessions depend on the tide. If no bookings are available for your chosen day on the calendar, the sanctuary is closed due to low tide.

Is there one ticket that covers more than one Darwin attraction?

Yes. The Croc and History Explorer package covers Crocosaurus Cove, the Royal Flying Doctor Service tourist facility and a 24-hour hop-on hop-off bus pass, and the Flying Doctor Service and Aviation Museum combo covers the Flying Doctor facility and the museum.

Local tip: Aquascene runs on the high tide, so lock in your Aquascene day on the booking calendar first and fit the Crocosaurus Cove cage dive sessions, which start from 9.30am, around it.

Pick your Darwin attractions above, and if one of them involves a crocodile, expect it to be the story you tell first.
