Discover Tours

Kimberley tours in Western Australia split by where you stay. Broome, Cygnet Bay and Derby lead to the Horizontal Falls by seaplane and fast boat, while Kununurra leads to Lake Argyle and El Questro. For the wider picture, see things to do in the Kimberley.

Horizontal Falls tours from Broome

The afternoon seaplane and boat tour with a barramundi lunch is a popular choice. It departs Broome at about 11.30am, returns at about 5.15pm and includes a creek cruise, marine park fees and a barramundi BBQ lunch on a luxury houseboat, with a swim in a marine viewing enclosure. It runs from March to November.

The morning flight and boat tour with breakfast is the early version: pick-up from 5am, departure at 6am, and a cooked breakfast on the houseboat in place of lunch. Both are half-day trips with return transfers from Broome accommodation.

The full-day Horizontal Falls and Dampier Peninsula tour runs a 10.5-hour day, leaving at about 5.30am, and is another popular choice. A custom-built 4WD takes you to Beagle Bay's Mother of Pearl Church and Cygnet Bay for a cooked breakfast and a guided pearl farm tour, before a seaplane flight to Talbot Bay, the fast boat ride, a barramundi lunch and a flight back.

Horizontal Falls from Cygnet Bay and Derby

If you're already on the Dampier Peninsula, the half-day Horizontal Falls and Cygnet Bay adventure starts at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm with a morning departure. The 5.5-hour trip adds a swim or snorkel with Tawny Nurse Sharks and a pearl farm tour, and you'll need to arrive early for check-in and a briefing.

Derby has its own departures. The half-day seaplane flight and boat cruise from Derby is also a 5.5-hour trip, leaves from Derby Airport in the morning after a 45-minute pre-departure check-in, and includes coach transfers. The overnight stay on a houseboat from Derby is an 18-hour trip, leaving Derby at about 2.15pm and returning at about 8.15am the next day, with a houseboat cabin in between.

Lake Argyle and El Questro tours from Kununurra

The 3-hour Lake Argyle lunch cruise leaves the Discovery Resorts Lake Argyle reception at 10am and covers the Main Ord Dam site and Ord River Gorge, with a lunch box and an optional swim in the infinity pool.

The full-day El Questro cultural tour from Kununurra is guided by Ngarinyin Traditional Owners and includes a cruise on Chamberlain Gorge, Dreaming stories and traditional healing practices, plus lunch at The Station Steakhouse.

What to know before booking a seaplane tour

Pack light. The Cygnet Bay and Derby half-day tours ask for a small backpack of no more than 2kg, closed-toe footwear (no thongs), sun protection, swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes.

Expect the falls to vary. The Horizontal Falls are driven by tides that change daily, so passage through the narrow gap isn't guaranteed on every day. The afternoon Broome tour and the Derby overnight stay run from March to November.
