Enter Aranui Cave, the smallest and most delicate of Waitomo's three main caves, with a friendly and knowledgeable guide leading the way. Just past the entrance, keep an eye out for a colony of native cave weta making their home in this dry cave, before safe boardwalks lead you deeper into a maze of narrow chambers.
Wander through high chambers to admire pale brown, pink and white stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones, some of the finest formations found anywhere in Waitomo. On the way in, an easy forest walk introduces the native trees and plants of the region, blending natural history, cave exploration and a touch of local wildlife into one memorable hour.
