What you can expect
For over 20 years, Wētā Workshop has crafted beautiful leatherwork for the big screen. Having kitted out countless armies with chainmaille and leather-adorned costumes, our crew has contributed to the visual splendour of many films, such as The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia and more, by creating the costumes and weapons seen on screen.
Step into the world of handcrafted costume design and discover the art of leatherwork in our hands-on workshop. Craft side-by-side with our crew learning techniques that bring timeless leather accessories to life on screen as you refine, design and dye your own creation.
In this beginner workshop you’ll also learn how to stamp and emboss, adding personalised design to genuine leather using traditional techniques. Then dye and finish your sample, exploring colour application with professional dyes to give your keepsake character. Then take your creation home!
Our creative workshops cater to small groups to allow for one-on-one learning with our crew.
No creative experience is necessary.

- Weta Workshop is based on the corner of Weka Street and Camperdown Road, Miramar, Wellington.
- There is a 550m walk between the tour space and hands-on workshop space. Please allow enough time to find a carpark, as spaces are limited.
- Creative workshops are available for those aged 12 and over
- Photography is strictly prohibited whilst in the tour spaces
- Please notify the provider if you have sensitive skin or known allergies
- Please allow up to 48 hours for a response. If cancellation is made within 24 hours of arrival, there is no refund available.
- If cancellation is made within 48 hours of arrival, we will refund 50% of the total booking price.
- If a tour is cancelled by Weta Workshop, we can reschedule your tour to another day that suits you or offer a full refund.
- Confirmation in the form of a tour voucher will be received at time of booking
- Upon completion of purchase, please print the voucher and present on day of the experience
- Mobile Vouchers are accepted! - Vouchers can also be presented on your mobile device for this attraction
