What you need to know

  • Five-hour return heritage rail journey through the world-renowned Taieri Gorge
  • Travel across more than 12 bridges and viaducts, including the iconic Wingatui Viaduct
  • Open-air viewing platform with panoramic views of the gorge
  • Exclusive stop at Deep Stream to walk across the century-old viaduct
  • Engaging onboard storytelling sharing the history, engineering and stories of the line
  • Locally prepared food and drinks available to purchase from the onboard café

  • Private carriages may be available on request if you have a group of 30+ passengers.
  • This experience departs at 9:30AM and arrives to Pukerangi at 11.15am, with return (if purchased) to Dunedin by 2:15PM
  • Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your train trip departs. Check in begins 60 minutes before a train’s scheduled departure and ends 15 minutes before the train departs
  • Please allow approximately 4 - 4.5 hours in duration from Dunedin Station
  • This experience departs from Dunedin Railway Station, Anzac Avenue, Central Dunedin, Otago
  • Due to the remote nature of this journey, mobile phone connection is limited and it is not always possible to use credit cards or EFTPOS in the onboard cafè. Please bring cash to purchase refreshments. You can also settle your tab when back in reception.
  • Wear comfortable, casual clothes and bring something warm too. The tour offers some opportunities to disembark at various points of interest, so flat shoes are recommended.
  • All trains depart from the Dunedin Railway Station: Check-in begins 1 hour before the train departs and ends 15 minutes before departure.
  • Dunedin Railways offers a wheelchair accessible carriage and lift, available upon request only due to limited capacity. Please email us to request.
  • There is parking available at Dunedin Railway Station. Check the website for parking information.
  • For the safety and comfort of everyone, smoking is not permitted onboard our train
  • For the comfort of all passengers, only assistance dogs are allowed onboard
  • All carriages have air conditioning and heating to suit the outside weather conditions
  • There is plenty of pay-and-display parking available around the Dunedin Railway Station. Parking is free on Sundays. If you have a campervan, the best place to park is the carpark on Thomas Burns Road
  • We have ramps available that passengers may use to board/disembark at the Dunedin Railway Station and most of our destinations.
  • Dunedin Railway Station has a wheelchair accessible carriage and lift - available on request only (due to limited capacity). The lift can accommodate wheelchairs that weigh a maximum weight of 200kg and are no more than 900mm long by 700mm wide.
  • To request wheelchair access, please contact us before purchasing tickets and at least 3 business days before your preferred train departs
  • All tickets are subject to Dunedin Railway Station's Terms and Conditions.
