Join us on The Whale Discovery Tour for a spectacular day on the water, watching humpback whales migrate along the breathtaking Lake Macquarie coastline. Departing from Chalmers Street Jetty on the ocean side of Swansea Bridge, we’ll cruise through the crystal-clear waters of Swansea Channel before heading offshore in search of whales. Keep your eyes open for long-nosed fur seals and playful bottlenose or common dolphins along the way.
Our custom-built boat offers shelter from the elements while still giving you unbeatable, water-level views of the action. Every year, tens of thousands of humpbacks make the journey from the icy waters of Antarctica to the warmer seas near the Great Barrier Reef – a 10,000 km round trip, often without eating!
Powered by their energy-rich blubber, these ocean giants migrate, nurture calves, and perform spectacular aerial displays, from dramatic breaches to thunderous tail slaps. Whale watching from Lake Macquarie is an unforgettable way to see these incredible animals up close in the wild.

- The tour will be rescheduled or cancelled in the unlikely event of poor weather
- If whales are not spotted on a designated whale watch tour between May to November, each passenger will be entitled to a ‘standby ticket’ enabling them to return on another subsequent tour date, this ticket is subject to availability and must be used within the same whale watching season
- Contact the CoastXP team prior to booking your tour to discuss any accessibility requirements
- This tour runs with a maximum of 12 people
- Participant changes are allowed
- If whales are not spotted each passenger will be entitled to a ‘standby ticket’ enabling them to return within the same whale watching season
- Not suitable for children aged under five years
- Not recommended for those with back or heart problems, who are pregnant or who have other serious medical conditions
- Change your booking up to 48 hours before the start time of your experience
- Changes are not permitted within 48 hours of your experience
- Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience
- Confirmation in the form of a tour voucher will be received at time of booking
- Upon completion of purchase, please print the voucher and present on day of the experience
