Queenstown zipline tours run through native beech forest on the Skyline Gondola hill above town, or across private land near Glenorchy. A 1-hour tour with two ziplines and a 21m drop is the short version, and the 8-line half-day with Paradise Ziplines is the long one.
Every Ziptrek tour meets at the Ziptrek Treehouse, just past the helipad beside the top terminal of the Skyline Gondola on Bob's Peak. There is no vehicle access to the Treehouse, and a Skyline Gondola pass is bought separately.
The Kereru tour is the shortest. It begins with a 10-minute uphill walk along Queenstown's Tiki Trail, then two ziplines and a 21m drop, with the guides covering the local forest and the story of Zealandia.
The Moa tour is a 90-minute, family-friendly run on four ziplines, with views from Lake Wakatipu to the Remarkables and Māori mythology from the guides. It starts and finishes at the top of the gondola.
The Kea six-line tour is the longest above town. It adds a 20-minute downhill walk through beech forest with commentary, and finishes on a flying fox that drops 30 storeys at speeds up to 70km/h.
Paradise Ziplines is the wilderness option: eight ziplines of different lengths, about 1km of zipping in total, through native beech forest with mountain views. The base is a 10-minute drive out of Glenorchy, on private land the public cannot otherwise reach, and the guides supply a harness, gloves and a helmet.
Pick-up is in Glenorchy, so you drive yourself from Queenstown, a 45-minute scenic drive, before a 3.5-hour trip. The operator runs in almost all weather unless conditions are unsafe.
Wildwire Wanaka's Level 1 via ferrata at Twin Falls swaps ziplines for ladder rungs fixed to the rock and narrow suspension bridges beside a double waterfall. It is the introductory grade, aimed at first-time climbers, and the meeting point is Twin Falls on the Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road.
Short on time, or travelling with younger kids? The Kereru and Moa tours are the shorter options, both starting from the top of the gondola. Want distance and speed? The Kea tour is the longest above town, and Paradise adds eight lines in a quieter forest setting.
Zip lining pairs well with the rest of Queenstown activities. The Kawarau Bridge, a 25-minute drive away, is the place for bungy jumping, and zip lining across Australia and New Zealand runs from the Gold Coast to Auckland. On the North Island, zip lining in Auckland is another option.
Queenstown zipline tours run from a 1-hour Ziptrek Kereru tour to a 3.5-hour Paradise Ziplines trip. The Moa tour is a 90-minute outing and the Kea tour a 3-hour one.
A Skyline Gondola pass is not included in Ziptrek tours and is bought separately. The Ziptrek Treehouse sits beside the top terminal of the gondola.
Ziptrek tours take children from 6 years old, and the Moa tour is the family-friendly pick. Guests under 30kg can zip tandem with a guide on the Moa tour only.
Paradise Ziplines picks up in Glenorchy, so you drive yourself from Queenstown first. It is a 45-minute scenic drive.
Paradise Ziplines operates in almost all weather and stops only when conditions are unsafe. The operator contacts guests on the phone number in the booking if a trip is called off.
