What you can expect
Visit the youngest geothermal system in the world and walk through the native flora and fauna. It is a 4km walk through the wildlife sanctuary and visits features such as the Frying Pan Lake, the largest hot spring in the world, Cathedral Rocks, Inferno Crater and Warbrick Terraces.
At the end of the walk is Lake Rotomahana, where you will board the Ariki Moana for a 45 minute cruise. You will see thermal activity and native bird life, all while receiving a full commentary from the skipper about what you are seeing and the history of the lake and the Mount Tarawera eruption.
At the end of the cruise a shuttle bus will be waiting to take you back to the visitor centre. This experience is part of the Responsible Range as it was awarded a Qualmark Enviro-Gold endorsement.

What you need to know
- 4km self guided walk
- 45 minute cruise on Lake Rotomahana
- Shuttle transfer back to the visitors centre
- Begin your 2 hour self-guided walking tour at any of the following times so to allow enough time reach the boat cruise; 8.30am, 9.30am, 11.10am, 12.00pm, 12.50pm, 1.30pm
- Bookings are essential
- Please allow 3.5 hours for this whole experience
- Please bring with you good walking shoes, sun block, water and a warm jacket
- There is a licenced Café on onsite as well a souvenir store with a large range of New Zealand Made souvenirs
- Change your booking up to 48 hours before the start time of your experience
- Changes are not permitted within 48 hours of your experience
- Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience
- Confirmation in the form of a tour voucher will be received at time of booking
