What you can expect
Join an action-packed adventure in the Southern Alps, starting with a 15-minute scenic helicopter flight that showcases some of New Zealand’s greatest landscapes. Lifting off from Makarora, you’ll fly over the Wilkin and Makarora rivers and towards the snow-capped peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park. From your seat in the sky, you’ll have views of shimmering alpine lakes, waterfalls, and glaciers before touching back down to continue to the next part of your journey.
Once on the ground, you'll board a jet boat for a 30-minute ride, speeding across two wilderness rivers. Between thrilling spins and fast turns, your experienced guide will share stories about the region’s natural wonders and fascinating history. This seamless experience delivers the perfect balance of breathtaking scenery and heart-racing fun, making it an ideal way to explore the alpine wilderness in just a few hours.

- This experience departs from Backcountry Helicopters located at Rata Road and State Highway 6, Makarora 9382.
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sunglasses and a hat
- This activity is not suited for people with limited mobility or physical disabilities
- Minimum of two passengers for the helicopter flight; If not met, another activity will be offered
- Children under three years old and under 18kg may travel free of charge; must sit on parent's lap
- If you have any concerns, medical conditions, or injuries, please inform the office staff before your journey
- In extreme weather conditions the tour may be cancelled if safety is a concern, you will be contacted by the provider and rescheduled
- Change your booking up to 30 days before the start time of your experience
- Changes are not permitted within 30 days of your experience
- Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience
- Confirmation in the form of a tour voucher will be received at time of booking
